Reshoring, the concept of bringing manufacturing and services previously transferred overseas back to the U.S., continues to be a hot-button, and sometimes knee-jerk issue, for the manufacturing industry. Trade tensions and posturing around tariffs continue to place a spotlight on the initiative, but alongside these elements lie a growing sentiment that reshoring is not as easy or cut-and-dried as when summed up for a media soundbite. While some companies are reconsidering prior offshore moves amid rising labor costs in Asia, there is more to the reshoring effect than meets the eye. Looking at the positives, reshoring can be an agreeable way to balance budgets, boost employment, introduce better jobs and attract a new generation of workers to the manufacturing industry. Apprenticeships are One Way to Fight the Skills Gap

Throughout the U.S., unemployment is at an all-time low. While this is good news for the country at large, it is complicating matters for employers in the manufacturing industry who are looking to hire. The challenge to hire skilled workers remains a problem throughout manufacturing with 78 percent of manufacturers citing a lack of qualified candidates. This deficiency is one of the top two factors impacting the ability to hire a skilled workforce, according to Tooling U-SME, a provider of competency-based learning and development solutions for the manufacturing community. The deficit of a skilled workforce also means manufacturers that are unable to fill these positions are experiencing a loss in productivity and quality losses, which impacts the company’s overall ability to grow.
